Every two years the Department of Energy sponsors the Solar Decathlon, where 20 teams of students from universities around the world are awarded $100,000 grants to design and build 800 sq. ft. original houses that showcase sustainable and renewable design elements. Houses are judged on ten different characteristics—a decathlon— and are open to the public on the National Mall in October. Rice University has been chosen as the only team to represent Texas in this year’s event. Over the past three semesters, Rice’s team of student architects and engineers has produced a house that will meet the rigorous competition requirements, withstand the challenges of Houston’s climate, and meet the needs of residents in Houston’s Third Ward.
